Urban Agriculture Cooperative (UAC)

Urban Agriculture Cooperative began as a farmer’s market program arm of the non-profit Planting Seeds of Hope in 2014, led by Alexandra Payne and the team at SWAG Project Farm. UAC spun off as an official non-profit entity to offer all-around support for small urban growers and their programs to help raise resources for collective action in reducing food deserts. A specific, narrower focus emerged on developing farmer’s market solutions, food distribution, and the supply chain from grower to consumer.

After joining their extraordinary team as a community produce distributor in the Fall of 2023, a few others and I formed and created a smaller unit of designers within the organization dedicated to expanding UAC’s image by creating a multitude of helpful designs for their online market orders, delivery van, recipe flyers, and more. I have even extended our artistic reach through UAC’s many agricultural connections and piloted a design/marketing consulting freelancing business with two other associates for all of their local farmers and producers as well.

Stickers

This was very much needed and at the top of the list for UAC as a need on all of their produce boxes that we send out every week to our subscribers, especially being that eggs & mushrooms are two of the most popular items. After being able to indicate if any box carried fragile eggs or mushrooms, and of which variety, for us and the customers we were able to properly handle & better communicate certain operations in the warehouse. We ultimately ended up utilizing different colored egg stickers to indicate different programs that we’re packing on a daily basis. This helped with general organizational management of the boxes tremendously.

This lead to me to spearhead the creation of “origin” stickers with the help of my manager’s initial idea of appropriately sourcing all of our items from the producers & farmers that supply us with particular goods. Signifying that they are locally sourced items with a distinct look that was subject to change was something that now had to tackle.

Urban Grown or NWK Newark Grown, based on a previous project I created before known as “Newark Grown”, then became my new interchangeable template design that I personally altered depending on where the supplier originated from if need be, so later on variations like, NWK Grown, NJ Grown & even Paterson Grown were used to indicate specific locations of a product or produce item that we utilize in the subscription boxes.

Custom Van Decal Wrap

Serena is the name of our delivery van that we use to travel all around New Jersey delivering our veggie produce boxes to our many drop-off locations or picking up handmade goods from local producers or farmers, and she desperately needed a makeover! The design we made as a team, myself & two other designers, for UAC allowed their brand to be more visible on the road. We found it necessary to display all of their contact information, logo, and hand-drawn aesthetics of the cardboard boxes we use themselves. We transformed Serena from a white blank canvas to an illustrative icon after the decal was wrapped around this van.

Lastly, we also created and included some guidelines and procedures to follow when operating the van for new members of the packing or delivery team.
